Use the line in socket on your sound card.
You only need to provide a signal with a low pre amp to the 'line in'
socket - if needed you can boost the sound signal using Audacity and its
great range of filters and enhancers.
Audacity often has a problem with onboard sound chips and the option for
'line in' will be be 'grayed out' when you try to record.
If this is the case you need to get hold of a sound card - the most
trouble free sound cards are by Creative - I currently use an old Vibra
128 with my copy of Audacity - it may be a bit old but for CD quality
audio if manages just fine.
My mobo is HDMI capable and has an onboard chip for HD audio - but
Audacity will not use it to record from the line in socket.
So I record with the Vibra 128 and play back with the HD audio - sounds
pretty damn good to me.
