if it was an .au domain then I am sure I would have no issues contacting a local registrar - a few well placed phonecalls would do the trick. My mistake was to register the domain with a cheapie non-Aus registrar and to leave it registered there.
I have now registered the .net.au, the .com and the .com.au with an Australian Registrar and have started to change appropriate registrations to the new addresses. When the domain is expired I will register it with this registrar and I will have all my domain assets under my control again. The positive thing that came out of this is that I originally wanted the .com domain and in the time it took me to get home from work to register it someone had gone and taken it from me and I was left with the .net. But now I have it.
not sure if there is a moral to the story; except if it is important to you use the correct tools to maintain it.
Enjoy

I'm fairly sure if it's an .au domain, then there is an organisation
you can contact, and once you prove you are the person on the contact
details, they can force some of the needed changes (i.e. give you the
auth code). Not sure for non .au domains.
