Perth Linux Users' Group

August 2005 Seminar

This month we will have two speakers, focussing more on the community surrounding Linux and Free software than the technical aspects of Linux.

Title: Open Source WA
When: Tuesday, 9 August 2005, 7:30pm - 8:15pm
Where: Open Source WA Centre, Tech Park
Presenter: Phil Twiss (was originally going to be Kevin Russell)

Kevin will be speaking about the Open Source Centre WA, in particular:

  • What is OpenSource WA, and why the WA government is involved in this.
  • Progress of similar activities in other states and around the world.
  • Linkages and networks (the human kind, not the computer kind).
  • The OS Demonstration Centre and how members of PLUG can make use of the facilities.
  • What now? Future plans and activities for OpenSource WA.

Following Kevin's talk, Harry McNally will be speaking about Computer Angels, another organisation devoted to spreading computer literacy, making good use of Linux:

Title: Are you a Computer Angel?
When: Tuesday, 9 August 2005, 8:15pm - 9:00pm
Where: Open Source WA Centre, Tech Park
Presenter: Harry McNally

Computer Angels started as an email to the PLUG mailing list in late 1998. A lot has happened since then. This talk will not be technical but will focus on how we provide information and support to address the real digital divide which is a knowledge gap, not a hardware access problem. Okay, so we might ponder a few technical things too.

A transcript of Harry's talk is available from the Computer Angels web site.
